    What to expect: The hotel, screened by gardens, is on the main street of the fashionable resort area of Isla Verde, east of Old San Juan. Leisure and business travelers frequent the hotel during the week. On weekends, locals visit the restaurants and casino. A large pool and beach give the hotel tropical-resort appeal. After dark, the atmosphere becomes more formal, and the resort glitters with big-city ambience.

    Amenity highlights: Gently washed by Atlantic surf, the two-mile-long, 50-yard wide Isla Verde beach fronting the resort is protected by an offshore reef and offers ample room for quiet sunbathing. The hotel has an expansive, lagoon-style pool that meanders under a bridge, through flowering gardens, and past tall palm and gum trees and rock waterfalls. Guests relax in cushioned lounge chairs and shady cabanas. A large spa tub is next to a rocky waterfall.

    Insider tip: On request, the resort staff can arrange romantic, candle-lit dinners on a wood deck next to the beach. A personal server in formal wear attends.
