What to expect: Gracious, relaxing, and romantic, the resort caters to discriminating world travelers. Groupings of giant colored candles containing smaller, aromatic candles scent buildings. After dark, ramps and stairs glow with light provided by candles in large glass vases, and lanterns and torches illuminate the beachfront. By day, public spaces, the pool deck, and the beach are hushed and restful.

Amenity highlights: Divided into north and south sections by the resort's big swimming pool, a white-sand beach at the resort's front curves for more than one-half mile along the turquoise Caribbean. Most of the beach is raised from a rocky shore and protected from erosion. The flat, sand terrace is furnished with lots of thatched-roof palapas with hammocks.

The pool includes a shallow, semi-circular children's section equipped with water jets. The surrounding sundeck is furnished with padded lounge chairs that have cylindrical pillows to support necks and knees. A pool concierge rents CD players and discs and provides Internet access at the desk.

Insider tip: On request, guests who stay in Beachfront rooms can have a hammock delivered to their outside terrace for peaceful reading/sunning/slumbering.
