What to expect: The resort serves as one of the San Juan metropolitan area's most popular after-dark gathering places. Dressed-up guests and locals socialize in an ornate lobby featuring red marble, mahogany paneling and carved ceilings, an antique chandelier, antique tapestries, and three large bars that blend into one another; dine in one of the resort's many restaurants, including two on the roof; stroll into the casino; and dance until nearly sunrise in Babylon nightclub and The Chico Lounge. In daylight hours, when the focus shifts to pool and beach, guests have the resort largely to themselves.

Amenity highlights: A massive pool complex features flowering gardens, numerous shade trees (including an enormous gum), and spacious sundecks furnished with padded lounge chairs. The complex includes a grotto waterfall; an expansive freeform pool with swim-up bar; a second, 120-by-50-foot pool; and three 10-person spas, one of which is raised in a rock-garden and fronted by a plunge pool cascading into the freeform pool. Washed by gentle Atlantic Ocean surf, 2-mile-long Isla Verde Beach provides additional space for sunbathing. Beach vendors offer Jet Skiing, parasailing, and banana boating.

Insider tip: Public bus service (25 cents) connects Isla Verde with Old San Juan 7 miles west of the resort.
